Booker T. Washington was among the most celebrated educators, authors, and statesmen of his day.  Born into slavery on a Virginia plantation, he became one of the nation's leading educators at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and inspired many who later led the struggle for the full implementation of the rights of all Americans.
